Actress Shannen Doherty has revealed that she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer last year.
The Charmed and Beverly Hills 90210 star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Two years later, in 2016, Doherty announced that she was “done with chemo” and was feeling “great.”
However, earlier this week, when speaking on Good Morning America, the 48-year-old said: “It’s going to come out in a matter of days or a week that– I’m stage four. So my cancer came back.”
“I don’t think I’ve processed it. It’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways,” Doherty said in the interview.
Doherty, who has documented her battle with cancer on her social media channels, opened up about how she is coping with the diagnosis.
“I definitely have days where I say why me. And then I go, well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this? None of us do,” she said. “But I would say that my first reaction is always concern about how — how am I going to tell my mom, my husband.”
The actress admitted, this time around, however, she decided to keep the diagnosis to herself – she found out that she was stage four during the filming of last year’s 90210 reboot, which began just months after former co-star Luke Perry passed away from a stroke.
“It’s so weird for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was seemingly healthy to go first,” said Doherty.
Doherty said that the only person that she shared the diagnosis with was co-star Brian Austin Green.
“I had moments of great anxiety where I thought, ‘I can’t really do this,’ and Brian was the one person who – of that group of people that knew – that I told pretty quickly and said, ‘Here, this is what I’m dealing with,'” she said.
Doherty told Good Morning America that the decision to share her diagnosis came about because of court filings set to be released this week in an ongoing legal battle she has with an insurance company which include details of her health status.
“I’d rather people hear it from me,” she said.
