The Royal New Zealand Ballet is bringing back A Midsummer Night’s Dream for a Christmas season.

Magic, mischief and Mendelssohn combine in the whimsical ballet, set to captivate audiences once more.

Created for the RNZB by Liam Scarlett, the popular ballet based on one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies first debuted in 2015.

Now it’s back to delight, lift spirits and spread cheer for the holiday season.

The piece includes a stunning set and costume designs by Tracy Grant Lord and clever lighting by Kendall Smith, helping dancers bring Shakespeare’s timeless characters and enchanted wood to life.

With a run spanning October to December, performances will take place in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Napier, Rotorua and Auckland.

“Being one of the original ‘Pucks’ in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2015 continues to be one of the highlights of my decade with the RNZB,” says RNZB Soloist Shaun James Kelly of the delightful ballet.

“Bringing this iconic character to life and hearing the laughs and gasps of the audience as the story unfolds is truly magical – it’s funny, quirky and unashamedly romantic,” the performer says. “Flying across the stage, in the magical forest world, is pure delight for the dancers and audiences.”

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be conducted by Hamish McKeich with performances in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland featuring Orchestra Wellington, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Auckland Philharmonia.
