Richard Avedon exhibition
Richard Avedon People celebrates the work of the American photographer at the Art Gallery of Western Australia from August.

Richard Avedon’s iconic image of Dovima posing in an evening dress by Dior with elephants is one of 80 photographs to be exhibited at the Art Gallery of Western Australia from August 2 to November 17.

The exhibition, Richard Avedon People, celebrates the work of the great American photographer (1923 to 2004) and offers an overview of his achievements in black and white portraiture and includes images of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Malcolm X as well as portraits of ordinary New Yorkers and the people of America’s West, going about their daily lives.

“This exhibition brings these lesser-known yet compelling portraits together with his often controversial, always captivating, iconic shots. In doing so, this exhibition provides a rounded and truly inspiring insight into Avedon’s incredible practice,”says Art Gallery of Western Australia director Stefano Carboni.
