Sequel to be released next year
Fans have waited 20 long years, and now a date has been announced for the release of a sequel.
Multiple outlets are reporting The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set for a May 1, 2026 release date.
It comes after news broke last July that a sequel to the comedy was officially in the works at Disney.
No cast confirmed yet
The original 2006 cast included Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. But none of these Hollywood heavyweights have been confirmed for the sequel yet.
Tucci recently told Variety, “I know they’re working on it. If it happens, I would be so happy, but I cannot give you any information. Otherwise, I’ll go to the actor’s prison or something. [The original] was one of the best experiences ever.”
Blunt has also previously expressed that she would be keen on a sequel, and confirmed in December “there [are] rumblings”. She said: “There is stuff churning around. But I don’t know if I can confirm anything. But we would all be delighted.”
Plot to explore a changing media landscape
In 2022, Hathaway told The View that she didn’t think a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada was possible due to changes in how media is consumed.
“Now everything’s gone so digital and that movie is centred around the concept of producing a physical thing and it’s just, it’s just very different.”
But the writers may be using that shift to their advantage, with outlets reporting the sequel will follow Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly as she navigates a decline in print media.
Additionally, Variety reports that Blunt’s character Emily will return as a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly is chasing.
Original screenwriter and director likely to return
Deadline reported last year that Aline Brosh McKenna, who adapted Lauren Weisberger’s novel into the original film’s screenplay, had been tapped to script the sequel.
The original film’s director, David Frankel, and producer, Wendy Finerman, were also in talks to return.
