Where The Crawdads Sing was chosen as Reese’s Book Club’s September pick and has since sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide and topped numerous bestseller lists.
The coming-of-age story follows Kya, a young girl from North Carolina who raises herself from young age in the early 1950s before being accused of murder as a teenager.
After the first Where The Crawdads Sing trailer March, fans were excited to see a full look at this “lush” adaptation. In mid-May, a second Where The Crawdads Sing movie trailer was released, giving us a better look at the highly-anticipated film.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the film’s director described seeing Kya brought to life by actress Daisy Edgar-Jones in the audition. “When we saw Daisy read, we all felt it…. It was like hearing Kya’s voice. It was just a stunning, stunning audition,” says Olivia Newman.

Reese Witherspoon has produced it
After a successful string of book-to-movie adaptations, Reese Witherspoon added the hotly-anticipated project to her producer resume.
The Big Little Lies star will be co-producing the adaptation of the best-selling novel written by Delia Owens.
Witherspoon, who was an early fan of the book through her popular book club, will be producing the film under her Hello Sunshine production company.

Since founding the company in 2012, Witherspoon has had a successful string of films and TV shows, including Wild, Gone Girl, The Morning Show and Big Little Lies. She is also set to produce an adaptation of another bestselling novel, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.
Daisy Edgar-Jones starring as the lead
Daisy Edgar-Jones, who played Marianne in the hit TV series Normal People, landed the lead role in the Where The Crawdads Sing movie.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Edgar-Jones said she is “very excited” to bring Kya to life on the screen. “It’s a great team of women and a brilliant story of a strong female character who is so complex and so fragile and interesting and strong.”
Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson have been cast as the two male leads.

Smith, who recently starred in Shadow of the Cloud, will be playing Tate Walker, the young fisherman who falls for Kya.
Harris Dickinson is set to play star quarterback Chase Andrews.
It’s backed by a female-strong team
Alongside Witherspoon’s producer role, Olivia Newman, director of Netflix’s wrestling drama First Match will direct the film and the screenplay is being adapted by Lucy Alibar, writer of Beasts Of The Southern Wild.

Witherspoon will also be co-producing the Crawdads film with long-time producer Lauren Neustadter, who has worked on Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere.
It will be released in July 2022
