Red hot: The celebrity-favourite hair colour and the products to keep it vibrant

Kendall Jenner, Sydney Sweeney and Hailey Bieber have all embraced a red moment.
Red is red hot. That’s according to hair stylists that have been picking the hue as the trending colour to try for a while now.

But what’s really helped snowball the popularity of a shade its estimated only one to two per cent of the human population have naturally?

The number of influential celebrities embracing a fiery change as a way to bring a little drama for a special event or media appearance. We’ve long admired natural shades on redheads such as Jessica Chastain, Isla Fisher and Julianne Moore, but a large number of other celebrities have also been giving red tones a spin.

The stars may have their colourist on call, but this year has shown the rest of us that while it can be a bit of salon-chair admin to make the change, it doesn’t have to be a long-term commitment.

With short attention spans and fashion and beauty trends coming at us at light speed, it’s the perfect hair colour option to have a little fun.

Hot right now? A burnished copper is the shade being embraced, with actress Lily James showing off the hue on the red carpet at the BFI London Film Festival Luminous Gala. the softer hue has come to be known as ‘Cowboy Copper.’

Singer Dua Lipa has been rocking a more rich cherry hue recently, ensuring it’s always brilliantly shiny to boot. Megan Fox has also experimented with a bold and bright red, and Emily Ratajkowski a more pumpkin-spice hue.

It certainly depends what your prior colour is, and whether you’re working with your natural hue  or a very deep or very light shade to begin with, but some people are able to simply try a colour-depositing shampoo or a semi-permanent product or glossing treatment to add some rich red to their hair.

Of course a divine, dimensional colour that lasts will always require the expertise of a professional that can select the right hue to flatter your skin tone and know which tones are bang on trend. A well-transitioned permanent hue is stunning if you are after a bold and significant change.

“Reds are unlimited for options [right now] ,” confirms Felicity Bruce, owner of Cocoon Hair Design, Timaru and Joico NZ Brand Ambassador.

“Chili chocolates with rich auburns are warming up the deeper copper looks and so easy to transition into a lighter red look when the weather starts warming up. Caramel and apricot highlights to add brightness and rich warmth. Richer roots melted into lighter ends are such a great way to add dimension.”

As suggested, anything goes when it comes to red but the common denominator for a great, vibrant and healthy result is the need for dedicated ongoing haircare products. Red is known as a hue that’s quick to fade or suffer from dullness.

“A lot of clients tend to think that colour fade is only due to the number of times they shampoo their hair, ” says Creative and Education Director of Rodney Wayne, Newton Cook.

“Actually there are many factors including the sun, swimming, and heat tools. There are many leave-in conditioning sprays that have multiple benefits to protecting your colour from all of those environmental challenges. My favourite product for that is the Pureology Colour Fanatic Multi Benefit Spray.”

For some serious red inspiration to show your colourist, these are the celebrities that have embraced a switch to red:
