Queensland, SA and WA report no new coronavirus cases
Australia has reported just 26 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, with Queensland, SA and WA reporting no new cases.

South Australia has now gone three days without a new coronavirus case.

In NSW, there were just six new cases in the last 24 hours, and one new case in Victoria.

On Monday, deputy chief medical officer Nick Coatsworth said the low number demonstrates that the physical distancing measures implemented across the country “are still paying dividends for us and still keeping our numbers of COVID-19 very low indeed”.

He said that elective surgery could be reintroduced before other physical distancing measures are eased.

“While I will not preempt national cabinet decisions, this is something that we recognise that there are Australians out there who are in pain and have disability, cannot be in the workforce, they need to take very potent pain medication and they need their elective surgery done,” Coatsworth said.

It comes as some beaches in Sydney’s eastern suburbs have reopened for exercise, with people allowed to work out at Coogee, Clovelly and Maroubra. Sunbathing is still banned.

There are currently more than 6,600 confirmed coronavirus cases across Australia, with the death toll standing at 71.
