As 2,000 notable guests arrived at Westminster Abbey, the Princess walked in with her two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Elegant as always, the Princess appeared in a simple black coat dress with black hat fitted with a netted mourning veil which she paired with a Japanese Pearl choker necklace. The four strings of pearls were joined with a diamond clasp in the center, a gift to the Queen from Japan in the 1970s.
Many members have worn the beautiful necklace before, including Princess Diana on a trip to the Netherlands in 1992. The new Princess of Wales also wore the choker to the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in 2021 (above).
Over the past 10 days of mourning, the Princess of Wales has also worn the Diamond and Pearl Leaf Brooch and the late monarch’s three-strand pearl necklace.
Royal history of pearls
Beloved by Queen Elizabeth, pearls have been customary for royal funeral appearances because they are subdued and devoid of colour.
Queen Victoria wore pearls for her 40 year mourning period after the passing of her husband, Prince Albert.
