Princess Anne takes veiled dig at young royals in new interview
Princess Anne has taken a subtle swipe at young royals in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

Speaking to the magazine about her philanthropy, she cautioned the younger generation against changing the Royal Family’s tried and tested approach.

The Princess Royal described herself as “the boring old fuddy-duddy at the back saying, ‘Don’t forget the basics.’”

“I don’t think this younger generation probably understands what I was doing in the past and it’s often true, isn’t it?” she said.

“You don’t necessarily look at the previous generation and say, ‘Oh, you did that?’ Or, ‘You went there?’ Nowadays, they’re much more looking for, ‘Oh let’s do it a new way.’

“And I’m already at the stage, ‘Please do not reinvent that particular wheel. We’ve been there, done that. Some of these things don’t work. You may need to go back to basics.’ ”

Anne is historically the most industrious member of the Royal Family, as the patron of over 200 charities. She carried out more than 500 royal engagements last year.

Her interview appears rather prophetic, with it being conducted before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were stepping back from royal duties.

When Harry and Meghan made the shock announcement over Instagram, the couple said they had decided to “make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution”.

When they outlined the details of their transition, the couple said they “intend to develop a new way to effect change and complement the efforts made by so many excellent foundations globally”.

They’ve since revealed they will be starting a new charitable organisation to be named Archewell.

“Like you, our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be,” Harry and Meghan said in a statement to Britain’s Daily Telegraph.

“Before SussexRoyal, came the idea of Arche – the Greek word meaning source of action. We connected to this concept for the charitable organisation we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters.

“Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon. We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”
