In the video posted to social media, the Prince of Wales praised the devotion of healthcare workers and expressed sympathy for those who have lost loved ones from the virus.

As the patron of Age UK, a charity offering help to the elderly, the Prince said his heart goes out “to all those older people throughout this country who are now experiencing great difficulty”.

Charles also urged people to support those on the front line in the National Health Service.

“And at a time when doctors, nurses and all the vital ancillary staff that form the backbone of our remarkable NHS are increasingly under such enormous strain, and risk, as they battle heroically to save lives in intensive care centres and to contain, as much as possible, the spread of this virus, our thoughts and prayers are very much with those marvellous people whose extraordinary skills and utter, selfless devotion to duty and the care of their patients make us so very proud,” he said.

Prince Charles revealed he had experienced “relatively mild symptoms” from the coronavirus, and said he is now “on the other side of the illness, but still in no less a state of social distance”.

The Prince encouraged UK citizens to “try and live with hope”, and “look forward to better times to come”.

“As a nation, we are faced by a profoundly challenging situation, which we are only too aware threatens the livelihoods, businesses and welfare of millions of our fellow citizens,” he said. “None of us can say when this will end, but end it will.”

It comes after the Royal Family announced the parade marking the Queen’s birthday, Trooping the Colour, will “not go ahead in its traditional form”.

“In line with Government advice, it has been agreed that The Queen’s Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will not go ahead in its traditional form,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“A number of other options are being considered, in line with relevant guidance.”
