The program for Sydney Design Week 2024 has been unveiled by the Powerhouse Museum.

Presented from 13-19 September, Sydney Design Week will bring together visionary designers, architects and artists who are creating space for alternative futures.

Titled ‘In Between Worlds’, the week will see events held across the city. Highlights include discussions by

  • Colin Gibson, Academy Award-winning production designer
  • Summaya Vally, architect and artistic director of the inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale
  • David Gianotten, architect and managing partner of international architecture practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)
  • Hassan Hajjaj, Moroccan-British artist
  • Melodie Yashar, international space architect
  • Professor Anna Puigjaner, MAIO co-founder and architect

Colin Gibson is an internationally renowned film production designer known for his work on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) which won an Academy Award for Best Production Design, a BAFTA and an Art Director’s Guild Award.

Parramatta will be the home for food events that display alternative methods of documenting culture and storytelling through cuisine.

Sydney food creative Karima Hazim and Sumayya Vally will prepare a traditional Lebanese Sunday breakfast at Baba Ghanouj Parramatta, while Professor Puigjaner will collaborate with Powerhouse’s Vitocco Kitchen program manager Xinyi Lim on a special culinary event in Parramatta Square.

Another highlight of the week will be a family-friendly weekend event at Powerhouse Castle Hill from the Australian Prodution Design Guild, which includes all-ages design workshops facilitated by leading designers, behind the scenes tours of Powerhouse Castle Hill’s state-of-the-art storehouse and insights into the magic of production design.

The week has been programmed by Creative Director Keinton Butler, Senior Curator at Powerhouse, in collaboration with Amaia Sánchez-Velasco from GRANDEZA STUDIO.
