Polish and whimsy come together with stylish precision at Queenstown’s The Central Private hotel
The Central Private is slick yet whimsical, and on the doorstep of Queenstown’s renowned action.

When the brief reads, ‘a creative cool vibe meets a sense of childlike wonder’, it could be easy to go overboard. Not so for the designers of The Central Private, a boutique hotel in Queenstown where polish and whimsy come together with stylish precision.

Part of the Naumi Hotels family, The Central Private has all the quirky hallmarks that have come to define the hotel brand. “We say to expect the unexpected with all of our hotel designs,” says CEO of Naumi Hotels New Zealand and Australia, Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala. “The Central is certainly no exception. We took a leap of faith to deliver a bold colour palette and a quirky design eye. You will not see anything like it in Queenstown.”

As the name suggests, the hotel is situated in the heart of the alpine town, next to the Queenstown Gardens and a five-minute walk to shops, restaurants and cafes. Boutique is certainly the right description. The Central has just 14 rooms and one suite across its three floors.

Earthy hues and pops of purple and pink adorn the Habitat rooms, most of which boast private courtyards in the leafy garden. The larger Oasis rooms sit up amid the treetops, with balconies and palettes of calming blues and forest greens. The Junior Suite is the largest room in the hotel, boasting two balconies and a private powder room.

The reception is the first thing that strikes you at The Central, the explosion of pastel greens and snow-globe themed décor is a delightful surprise when compared to the rather unassuming exterior.

The hotel promises a private, tailored experience, which is evident from the moment you walk in. The friendly concierge gives you a tour of the hotel, including downstairs to the intimate lounge. The perfect place to unwind after a day’s shopping, skiing or hiking, head to the lounge every evening between 5-6pm for happy hour drinks, or delight in the Kiwiana-themed sweet station and freshly baked cookies.

Down the hall you’ll find a private sauna with essential oils to send you off into heavenly bliss. Art is a big component at The Central. Pitched as ‘creativity with a dash of the surreal’, each room features specially commissioned wallpapers by local artist Deborah Moss, the hallways are dotted with quirky art pieces, and in the rooms you’ll find gorgeous coffee table books on art and design.

While the flashes of colour draw you in, it’s the little details at The Central that make you want to linger. Organic-shaped mirrors, mood lighting and plush furniture elevate the rooms into luxe havens. There are many thoughtful touches, too, like a make-your-own mocktail kit and gourmet chocolate truffles waiting in the room – a welcome sight for the weary traveller.

If your skin is feeling a little tired from your travels, indulge in a Syrene Skincare treatment kit, or soak in the tub with relaxing bath salts. The rooms feature all the modern amenities you need, including a smart TV, lounging area, luxurious king bed, and tea and coffee station. naumihotels.com/thecentralhotel
