Pantone’s Colour of The Year 2023 is vibrant and bold. Here’s how to embrace it with makeup
Pantone calls this year’s Colour of The Year 'powerful and empowering'. Here's how to adopt it in your beauty routine.

A signpost for both colour and design choices for the coming year, Pantone’s annual announcement of the Colour of The Year is always highly anticipated.

About this time every year the globally-recognised colour experts pick a shade that will both capture the zeitgeist and shape the year ahead.

For 2023, that colour is a bright and vibrant hue called Viva Magenta.

Pantone describes Viva Magenta as a “nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool”, and says the colour “vibrates with vim and vigor”.

“Brave and fearless, [Viva Magenta is] a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. Powerful and empowering, it is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.”

Recognising the influence of digital realms and the metaverse, Pantone says Viva Magenta is also a hybrid color, one that “comfortably straddles the physical and virtual in our multi-dimensional world.”

When making the selection Pantone also makes some gentle suggestions about how to adopt the colour into your life over the coming months.

That includes interiors, where the brand suggests one might “harness the full power as a velvet couch or lacquered wall. Those who desire a more neutral home can use it as a pop of color. As a sculptural Murano glass lighting fixture or striking ikebana floral arrangement.”

For designers, it is suggested as a great option for those looking for a colour that ‘cuts through’ as many consumers spend large portions of their days looking at a screen where the visuals tend towards pale and neutral.

“A brand using Viva Magenta expresses that it’s fearless, engaging, and that looks at the world unconventionally.”

This year Pantone has also flagged the way Viva Magenta can be worn as a beauty statement.

“Because Viva Magenta is a red that strikes a balance between warm and cool, it’s not too harsh for the body,” says the announcement.

“Instead it brings a fun, celebratory element. In the beauty industry, Pantone sees the Color of the Year worn in hair, especially on tips, a bold look that can transform hair into an accessory. Viva Magenta also shines on lips, cheeks, and nails. This versatile shade is universally flattering across ages, genders, and skin tones.”

Here are some of the best ways to embrace the trending hue:

Too Faced Lady Bold Lipstick

L’Oreal Color Queen Mono Eye Shadow in Ruler

Hermès Les Mains Hermès Nail Enamel in Rose Magenta
