Suspected explosive devices have been sent to former US President Barack Obama and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the US Secret Service has said.

Potential explosive devices were mailed to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, liberal billionaire George Soros, former CIA director John Brennan and Former Attorney General Eric Holder over the past few days.

The Time Warner Center in New York, where CNN is based, was evacuated on Wednesday (local time) – the device addressed to Brennan was sent to CNN. The return address of many of the packages was listed as Republican Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s address, CNN reports.

The devices were discovered by technicians who screen mail sent to the former US officials. There are several other reports saying that suspicious packages have been received by other high-ranking US officials in the past few days.

Hillary Clinton addressed the bombs in remarks at a campaign event in Miami.

“Many of you and others across our country have asked after me and my family, and I’m very grateful for that. We are fine, thanks to the men and women of the Secret Service,” she said.

“It is a troubling time, isn’t it? And it’s a time of deep divisions, and we have to do everything we can do to bring our country together,” Clinton said.

She went on to advocate voting for candidates who would promote unity. This comes as the country heads to the polls for mid-term elections next month.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders condemned the attempted attacks. She said in a statement:

“We condemn the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and other public figures. These terrorising acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

“The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take all appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards.”
