Princess Diana considered a burka for her 1986 visit to Saudi Arabia and had the designs sketched up by designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

Incredible sketches of outfits for Princess Diana’s visit to Saudi Arabia have just been released, and are set to fetch thousands at auction.

The designs, sketched by husband and wife duo David and Elizabeth Emanuel, include a drawing of a burka as she wanted outfits that ‘conformed to local customs’ for her 1986 tour.

The design duo, who famously designed Diana’s wedding dress, submitted sketches of four demure outfits, including a black and white silk evening dress.

The burka was a ‘reverse outfit’ that would have covered the Princess from head to toe, with only a gap for her eyes.

The Princess of Wales did not wear a burka during the trip. However the fact she was willing to consider it shows her sensitivity to other cultures, and forward-thinking mentality.

The sketches, along with fabric samples for the outfits, are being sold by US-based auction house RR Auctions and are tipped to sell for $30,000 (£24,000).

Invoices for the dresses also features in the sale revealing they cost between £275 and £450 each.
