After almost ten years, Outlander will be coming to an end after its eighth season, premium cable outlet Starz announced. The historal romance series, which is based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon and stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as Claire and Jamie Fraser, will end as the longest-running original series in Starz history.
The announcement comes months ahead of the Outlander season 7 release, which is due in the northern hemisphere summer 2023.
“For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” said Kathryn Busby, president original programming at Starz.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Balfe said it was a bittersweet but exciting next step. “It’s been a gift beyond my wildest dreams … brought me friendships for life, stretched me as an actor and a person and now we get to give you back one more season and finish it right for all you amazing fans. Thank you for being with us on this magical journey.”

The Fraser stories continues
Fans will be glad to hear that the Fraser story isn’t completely over. Starz has greenlit a prequel series, titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood which will tell the story of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen Mackenzie.
“Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain,” said showrunner Matthew B. Roberts.
“Jamie and Claire’s TV story may be coming to an end with season eight, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on book ten.
“With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the Outlander universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans.”
