NSW’s tough social distancing measures to be in place for 90 days
The tough social distancing measures currently in place in NSW will last for 90 days, says NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller.

Speaking to media on Thursday, Fuller said the laws banning gatherings of more than two people will be in place until June 29.

Fuller said after that date he “certainly won’t be seeking an extension”, and he hopes by then people “will have got the message”.

The coronavirus restrictions in place in NSW are Australia’s toughest, with the only lawful reasons to leave the house being to shop for food and other essential items, access medical care, exercise alone or with one other person, or to work or study if it cannot be done from home.

NSW Police have the power to issue on-the-spot $1000 fines to people who break the rules.

“I know it’s not a great look, but if one person’s allowed to sit in the park, everyone’s going to sit in the park. If one person goes to Bondi for a swim, 10,000 people are going to go,” said Fuller.

“Then we lose our distancing and we lose the whole effort to keep people at home and isolated.”

It comes after the coronavirus death toll in NSW rose to 10 on Wednesday, following the death of a woman at Orange Base Hospital.

On Thursday, Victoria announced a woman in her 70s had died in hospital, and Queensland also recorded the death of an 85-year-old man in hospital.

Australia’s death toll from COVID-19 now sits at 23.
