NSW Welcomes Its First Luxury Bathhouse Destination
A stunning new bathhouse has opened just outside of Sydney.

There’s something wonderfully elemental about the bathhouse. Long before wellness became an industry, cultures around the world understood the restorative power of heat, water, steam and cold. Today, the ancient ritual is being reimagined for modern life, with bathhouses emerging as social spaces designed not simply for relaxation, but for recovery and a much-needed reset.

The appeal lies in contrast. Move from the intense heat of a sauna into an icy cold plunge, sink into a warm mineral pool, then retreat into a cloud of steam. Each environment offers a different sensory experience, encouraging you to slow down, focus on the body and step away from the constant stimulation of everyday life.

Complete Contrast Therapy

Vela Spa & Bathhouse has just opened at Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley, 60 minutes from Sydney CBD. The first luxury bathhouse destination in NSW combining a complete contrast therapy and bathhouse circuit, float therapy, luxury spa treatments, wellness dining with a full resort stay, Vela is a place you can restore for either a day escape or a full wellness retreat.

“VELA is not just for people who can take a week off. You can be here in 60 minutes, spend a few hours in the bathhouse, have a good meal and be home before dinner. Or stay the night and make a proper break of it. That flexibility is very deliberate – rest and recovery should be within reach, not just reserved for special occasions.” said Stephen Wills, General Manager, Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley.

Nordic Sauna

For those new to the bathhouse experience, it all starts with heat. A traditional sauna raises body temperature and induces sweating, while the dry heat encourages you to sit quietly and breathe deeply. For many people, the greatest benefit is the enforced pause: no phone, no emails, nowhere to be.

Then comes the cold plunge. Stepping into cold water is an immediate shock to the system. Breathing becomes faster, blood vessels constrict and the nervous system switches into a heightened state of alertness. The experience can be challenging, but that is part of its appeal. Controlled exposure to cold may help with feelings of alertness and recovery and wakes the body up like nothing else.

Gentle Side of Hydrotherapy

The mineral pool offers the gentler side of hydrotherapy. Warm water supports the body, relaxes muscles and provides a sense of weightlessness, making it an ideal place to unwind between hotter or colder experiences.

Then there is the steam room, where heat meets humidity. Unlike a dry sauna, the air is saturated with moisture, creating a softer, enveloping sensation. Steam can feel particularly soothing for tired muscles and temporarily help loosen mucus and open congested nasal passages. It is also an opportunity to simply sit, breathe and allow the body to settle.

Steam Room

VELA’s bathhouse circuit allows you to indulge in the whole experience with a beautiful magnesium mineral pool, an outdoor cold plunge and barrel sauna, a traditional cedar sauna, steam room, and a fire and ice room featuring infrared sauna and cold plunge contrast therapy – alongside both indoor and outdoor relaxation zones. The experience is refined and quietly social: not silent, not rushed, guided by a slow pace and soft ambience that fosters genuine connection to nature, to self and to others. Vela also offer a host of outstanding body treatments and facials, featuring the Skeyndor, a professional Spanish skincare brand.

Spa Treatment Room

The bathhouse ritual can be approached intuitively rather than as a race to endure extremes. A typical circuit might begin with a sauna, followed by a brief cold plunge, several minutes resting and rehydrating, then time in the mineral pool or steam room, before repeating the process as desired. There is no prize for staying the longest in the cold or turning the heat to its maximum. The goal is to leave feeling restored, not depleted.

Heat and cold therapies place genuine demands on the cardiovascular system, so they aren’t suitable for everyone. People with certain heart or blood-pressure conditions, those who are pregnant, or anyone taking medications that affect temperature regulation should seek medical advice before using extreme heat or cold. Hydration is also essential.

Quiet Relaxation Zone

Perhaps the greatest luxury of the modern bath house is not any single treatment, but the opportunity to disconnect. In a world obsessed with optimisation, the bath house offers something simpler:  spaces that asks you to slow down and pay attention to how you feel.

It is wellness stripped back to its most elemental ingredients – water, heat, cold, breath and time. And sometimes, that may be exactly what the body needs.
