She may have been wearing a stunning black Balenciaga gown, but as the Australian star stepped on to the stairs of New York’s Metropolitan Museum for the annual ‘Met Gala,’ all eyes were on her hair.
In recent times Kidman has been wearing her strawberry blonde locks in a voluminous, long, flowing style. Just the day before the event she was seen wearing a long ponytail at a concert by pop star Charli XCX, so her arrival with a bold crop was a serious surprise.
So it prompted a flood of questions about whether Kidman has actually chopped off her hair in a radical beauty transformation, or whether she was simply wearing a well-styled wig for the occasion.
The 57-year-old Oscar winner had chosen a short, slicked back shape with a longer wavy fringe. Her two-tone colour included much darker roots, blending into blonde mid-lengths and ends.
Kidman’s hairstylist, Adir Abergel, was no more forthcoming about whether he had cut her actual hair or a wig, preferring instead to keep the focus on the inspiration for the style.
In a post on his Instagram, the stylist said the hair look was a nod to the evening’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme.
“The inspiration was a tailored short cut that brought out the essence of Dandyism on Nicole Kidman,” he wrote.
Adir continued, “I wanted to celebrate this years theme by honoring the Dandies and their individuality, elegance, and confidence—where every detail is tailored to that unique person.”
Whether Kidman actually cut her hair has not yet been revealed but the reality is, it’s besides the point. The modern look is likely to be influential regardless.
The bob has been a popular look over the last couple of years, but those wanting a touch more edge have been embracing more dramatic short styles like the pixie cut.
Kidman’s longer-on-top look is like a fresh variation on the ‘bixie,’ or bob-pixie hybrid. With plenty of length and volume in the longer top section, it’s a versatile look that will likely be embraced by many others this season.
