In a surprising move, Warner Bros. announced a follow-up film to the 1998 classic that stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, with a humous clip of the characters dancing on social media platform. TikTok.
Further to the post, film industry title Variety shared Bullock (59) and Kidman (56) are expected to return and are currently ‘in talks’ with the studio. The title says the two women are expected to co-produce the film alongside Denise Di Novi.

While the first movie was based on Alice Hoffman’s book of the same title and directed by Griffin Dunne, Akiva Goldsman will reportedly write the screenplay for the new movie. Variety shares while a spin off TV series was previously floated based on “Rules of Magic,” Hoffman’s prequel novel, according to comments from Di Novi it doesn’t sound like the new film will follow this storyline.
In February, Practical Magic producer Denise Di Novi told UPI the TV series was no longer development but teased another “secret.”
“There is something else that’s going to happen that is still a secret. But, I think the fans are going to be thrilled,” Di Novi said.
“It’s not ‘The Rules of Magic,’ which I did develop for television, but it’s in the world of ‘Practical Magic,’” Di Novi added at the time. “Something is in the works.”
A director has also not been linked to the new movie yet.
Practical Magic starred Bullock and Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, descended from a long line of witches. Raised by their eccentric aunts (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest) after their parents’ death from a family curse, the sisters were taught the uses of practical magic as they grew up. As adults, Sally and Gillian must use their magic to destroy the evil spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend (Goran Višnjić) before it kills them.
The film was was released in theaters for Halloween 1998, and while it didn’t break records at the box office, has become something of a cult hit in the years since, regularly rolled out around the spooky season.
There’s no word on when we might expect Practical Magic 2 to land, but in the meantime, revisit the original by enjoying the trailer to the 1998 film.
