New Zealand, the defending champion, reaffirmed its status as a powerhouse in women’s rugby by winning the Olympic gold. It was a tough game being pressured until the end by the Canadian team, which they ultimately defeated 19-12.
In a highly entertaining final, the Canadians threatened an even bigger surprise by reaching halftime with a 12-7 lead. However, the defending champions dominated the second half and were the clear winners of the match.
The United States had earlier won its first medal in any category of Rugby Sevens, beating Australia 14-12 to claim the bronze.
Japan is currently in the lead with seven gold medals. Australia is coming third, with six gold and a total of 10 medals.
