New Zealand reports highest number of COVID-19 cases in a single day

There are 89 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest number in a single day since the outbreak. The total is now 797 and 92 people have recovered.

The Ministry of Health’s data notes that 1% of the cases are classified as community transmission, though 17% of cases are being investigated and Dr Bloomfield expects community transmission to rise.

There are currently 6 clusters, with the highest number of cases in Queenstown, Waikato, Auckland and Waitemata.

Nearly 900,000 flu vaccines have been sent to providers and Dr Bloomfield says vaccinations are happening at pace as part of the COVID-19 response.

He is aware of issues in redistribution and says this is being addressed.

On his last day in the role of Police Commissioner Mike Bush says he is aware that there are issues around clarity when it comes to the lockdown rules.

Earlier today in the Epidemic Response Committee meeting, Bush was scrutinised around this issue by MPs. “We absolutely need clarity,” he said earlier, noting it as an action point.

Bush will stay on in a role as strategic leadership for the COVID-19 response.
