On Sunday the total number of cases in the state of New York was 59,513, an increase of nearly 7,200 cases from the day before. More than half the cases are in New York City.
The death toll from COVID-19 in New York is now around 850, which makes up more than 40 per cent of the entire death toll across the United States.
The number of coronavirus-related deaths rose to 965 on Sunday local time, up from 728 the day before, with the vast majority of deaths occurring in New York City.
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said the city has a one-week supply of medical equipment to care for any New Yorker who is sick.
“We have enough supplies to get to a week from today, with the exception of ventilators, we’re going to need at least several hundred more ventilators very quickly,” de Blasio told CNN.
“We are going to need a reinforcement.’’
It comes as the US government’s top infectious disease expert has warned the coronavirus outbreak could kill as many as 200,000 Americans.
Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also predicted that millions in the US could be infected.
The US has already had around 130,000 infections and 2,300 deaths, although the number of cases is believed to be considerably higher due to testing shortages and mild illnesses not being reported.
