The Centre d’Art Rodin, which is set to open on September 27, is a private gallery created in cooperation with the Musée Rodin in Paris, the management of the institution told dpa, clarifying that it isn’t an overseas branch of the French museum.
A project initiated by Chinese collector Wu Jing, the Rodin Art Centre will be housed in the former French pavilion that was built for the 2010 Expo Shanghai China for some €50 million ($55.6 million).
For her Shanghai exhibition, Wu has commissioned bronze casts of famous Rodin sculptures worth €20 million from the Musée Rodin, according to a report by French newspaper Le Monde.

The French institution holds the right to produce limited editions of Rodin’s original bronzes thanks to the moulds it inherited from the artist.
Rodin, who was born in Paris in 1840, provoked scandals with his expressive sculptures during his lifetime, but has long since been recognised as one of the pioneers of modernism. He died in the French town of Meudon in 1917.
Rodin’s most famous casts include The Thinker, The Kiss and the Walking Man, all on display at the Musée Rodin in Paris.
