New Aussie invention hopes to improve gut health

The Australian inventors of a device that records gut noises to help doctors accurately screen, diagnose and monitor gut health disorders are in line to compete for AU$1 million in fresh investment.

The Noisy Guts Project is being carried out by researchers at the University of Western Australia. It aims to develop and commercialise a new device that will provide doctors with an accurate and non-invasive approach to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) diagnosis.

The team behind the Noisy Guts project has invented an acoustic belt that listens to, records and analyses gut noises over time, with the aim.

The Noisy Guts Project has just taken a step closer to its goal of securing between $1 million and $5 million to commercialise the acoustic belt technology after winning first prize at the StartCon Pitch for AU$1 Million competition in Perth on Friday, August 31.

“The technology we’re developing will help doctors and patients accurately diagnose IBS, as well as objectively monitor symptoms so patients can work out which diet or treatment works best for them,” Noisy Guts Project strategic lead Dr Josephine Muir says. “Our belt will improve the quality of life for the one in five Australians that suffer from IBS.

“Our StartCon win puts us within reach of making sure this technology ends up in the hands of those who need it,” she says.

The Noisy Guts Project, aimed at improving gut health, will compete with winners from more than a dozen StartCon Pitch for $1 Million competition events in Australia and the greater Asia Pacific region at the StartCon main event, held from November 30 to December 1, 2018 at Royal Randwick Racecourse, Sydney.

StartCon is Australia’s largest startup and growth conference.
