The trailer for Netflix’s documentary about the White Island/Whakaari eruption, which saw 22 lose their lives, has been released. Titled The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari, the documentary is directed and produced by Rory Kennedy, along with executive producers Ron Howard and Leonardo DiCaprio.
The tragedy, which took place on 9 December 2019, saw 22 people lose their lives and another 25 being injured. Alongside footage of the eruption, the White Island/Whakaari Netflix documentary shows a number of survivors sharing their stories.
“I thought, ‘This is it. We’re going to die on our honeymoon’,” says one man.
Rescue workers also feature in the documentary, recounting their experiences of the tragic day. “I heard the call, ‘There’s people on the island and she’s erupting’,” says one man.
The White Island/Whakaari disaster saw WorkSafe file a number of charges against individuals and organisations for failure to ensure the safety of people visiting the island.
The Volcano: Rescue From Whakaari will be released on Netflix on 16 December 2022. Watch the trailer below:
