Morrison won’t follow Ardern’s move to cut pay for ministers
Australian prime minister Scott Morrison says a pay cut for government ministers is “not something that’s being considered”.

It comes after New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern announced she would be taking a 20 per cent pay cut for six months.

Morrison told 6PR a pay cut is “not something that’s currently before us”.

“We’ve already said there won’t be any pay rises right across the public service,” he said.

The PM said he suspects there are “people in the public service who are working like they’ve never worked before”.

“They do a great job and they’re as much on the frontline saving people’s livelihoods, frankly, as nurses working in hospitals.”

Speaking to media on Wednesday, Ardern said government ministers and public service chief executives will also be taking a 20 per cent pay cut.

“We acknowledge New Zealanders who are reliant on wage subsidies, taking pay cuts and losing their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic,” Ardern said.

She said that while it won’t significantly shift the government’s fiscal position, the decision is about leadership. “We feel…the struggle many New Zealanders are facing.”
