Meryl Streep is set to star alongside Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in the second season of hit television show, Big Little Lies. The three-time Oscar winning actress will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s character Perry.
Big Little Lies writer Liane Moriarty said she had written the role with Streep in mind, and asked Kidman to help acquire the Hollywood star, as the two famed actresses were friends. “Nicole sent me an email saying ”ask and you shall receive,”’ Moriarty says.
HBO confirmed that Streep had signed on and Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon shared their excitement on social media. “Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2… Monterey better watch out!!!” Witherspoon wrote on Instagram. Kidman kept it short and sweet, writing: “Welcome to the #BigLittleLies family Ms. Streep – can’t wait xx”.
The news marks a rare commitment to television for Streep, who predominately works in film with only brief television appearances across her long career. The star’s addition is expected to draw even more attention to Big Little Lies, which has garnered critical acclaim and picked up multiple awards across the Emmy’s, Golden Globes and SAG awards – including the most recent, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for Nicole Kidman.
