Meryl Streep has joined the dozens of celebrities and influencers promoting the idea of Oprah running for President of the United States. Oprah’s powerful speech at the Golden Globes called for racial and gender equality and claimed that “a new day is on the horizon.”
Streep spoke with the Washington Post about the moving moment. “[Oprah] launched a rocket tonight. I want her to run for president,” the 68-year-old Academy Award-winning actress said. “I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn’t have a choice.”

Despite Streep and many other celebrities showing support for an Oprah presidential campaign, the philanthropist and talk show host has previously stated she “will never run for public office.” Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter in July 2017, Oprah added that “that’s a pretty definitive thing.”
Trump said he wasn’t worried about the possibility of Oprah running against him in 2020.”Yeah, I’ll beat Oprah”, he told BBC. “I don’t think she’s going to run.”
Oprah won the Cecil B. DeMille award, which is bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.”
Everyone stopped to listen to @Oprah’s de Mille speech. This is her moment, and one day, others who listened to her words tonight will make everyone stop to listen too. #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/8tMVlqcUxl
