Mermaids Hate Plastic and Why You Should Too

Mermaids Hate Plastic and Why You Should Too

These incredible photos are the result of 10,000 plastic bottles, one photographer and a mermaid

Mermaids Hate Plastic and Why You Should Too

By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Currently 50% of the plastic we use is only used once before being thrown away.

From there, it takes approximately 450 years for a single plastic bottle to degrade. Virtually every single piece of plastic that has ever been created still exists on the planet today.

Faced with these figures, one photographer decided to collaborate on a project that would encourage others to act. Faced with the challenge of getting people to care about something “as boring and ordinary as plastic”, renowned photographer Benjamin Von Wong collaborated with a team to show just how much we are polluting the ocean.

In place of the ocean, Von Wong and his team of volunteers used 10,000 plastic bottles, representing the average number of bottles an American is expected to use over a 60 year period. His images are striking, with a mermaid collapsed on top of the sea of plastic.

Along with a team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to remove bottle labels and sort them into colours, Von Wong was supported by a camera crew, a professional make up artist and an air-brusher. The tails for the mermaids were made by Canadian designer Cynthia Cyntault of Cyntault creations, who made them specifically for the project.

Von Wong hopes the images start a conversation on how plastic bottles are polluting the oceans, and encourage people to avoid buying disposable plastics. He has created a petition where people can pledge to re-use plastics and limit the amount that ends up in waste.
