The Duchess of Sussex – formally Meghan Markle – stunned the fashion crowd on Monday night by putting in a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards.
Meghan Markle made an unannounced appearance at the British Fashion Awards at Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday for a special reason: to honour her wedding dress designer – Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of Givenchy – with the British Womenswear Designer of the Year award.
The Duchess of Sussex wowed guests at the star-studded event wearing a beautiful black one-shoulder dress that is believed to have been designed by the very woman she was there to honour.
“It is such an honor to be here celebrating British fashion and British fashion designers in my new home of the U.K.,” the Duchess said as she took the stage to presentWaight Keller with the award.
“As all of you in the room know, we have a deep connection to what we wear, sometimes it’s very personal and sometimes it’s emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in, really, being able to understand that it’s about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women.”
While accepting her award, Waight Keller thanked the Duchess for trusting her to design her gown for her big day.
“I got to know Meghan on such a personal level,” the British designer said. “To have someone like that trust you in an incredible moment in their life is something that is just the most unbelievable honor. I can’t thank you enough because it was the most beautiful moment.”
Controversial decision
Meghan also wore a dark nail color to match her stunning one-shouldered dress, despite traditional protocol advising that female royals must stick to a barely-there nude shade whenever they are attending official events.
