The first sighting of the nine stars of Matariki marks the dawning of the Māori New Year; a time for family and friends to reflect on the past, to remember those who are no longer with us, and to prepare for the year ahead.
Join the Auckland Museum in celebrating Matariki – the Light Within, a family-friendly evening of light-hearted entertainment and fun. Activities are available for adults and children alike- kiri tuhi or face-painting, and make your own porotiti- designed to bring out the “inner light” in fun and simple ways.
Choose to follow the lit pathway into the Maori court where the Learning Team will share stories of Matariki, and discover hidden areas in the Maori and Pacific Galleries with story, music, traditional games and taonga handling.
The Museum invite you to bring a family picnic basket, and enjoy Maori entertainment at its finest. Let’s celebrate Matariki together!
