Man who set himself on fire outside Parliament dies

The incident comes just two days before polling day.

A man has died after setting himself on fire outside Parliament in Wellington, New Zealand yesterday afternoon. The sole protester set himself alight on the lawn outside Parliament House just two days before the New Zealand election polling day.

The man was rushed to Wellington Hospital’s emergency department and treated for critical injuries, where he died overnight.

Little is known at this stage regarding the man’s motivations. Police are working to establish his identity, and using security footage from Parliament grounds to decipher his intentions.
