Janice McKinnon’s son’s life was saved through organ donation 10 years ago. Now the thankful mum is returning the favour to the donor family’s ailing father.
In 2005, Bill Millard and his wife made the decision to donate their son’s organs, following his accidental death.
The families developed a strong friendship as a result. Ms. McKinnon offered to help as soon as she heard Mr. Millard was in need of a kidney transplant.
Though her offer was a generous one, it could have proved pointless had she not been a suitable match.
The odds were not in Millard’s favour, as a non-relative being a perfect match for a kidney is 1 in 100,000.
Both families have expressed that the fact they’ve beaten such steep odds is clearly a sign that the match, and their friendship, was meant to be.
