Off the Runway: Burberry Spring 2019

Italian fashion designer Ricardo Tisci has made his debut at the helm of British fashion house at London Fashion Week. The former Givenchy creative director opened what was arguably the most anticipated show of LFW  with a take on Burberry’s most well-known piece, the trench coat. Tisci’s gave the classic trench his own twist with the addition of a  cinched elastic belt in chocolate brown.

An impressive 134 looks, including menswear, took to the catwalk. Throughout the collection, Tisci paid tribute to British culture of today and from years long gone.  Lady-like silhouettes – pleated midi skirts teamed with gossamer blouses – opened the show before Tisci’s ode to punk became obvious.

“I was thinking a lot about journeys as I started putting together my first Burberry collection,” Tisci revealed in a statement in the show notes. “From my personal journey back to London 20 years after I showed my graduate collection here, to how far I have come. I was also inspired by how much London—the city that made me dream to become a designer—has evolved. This show is a celebration of the cultures, the traditions and the codes of this historic fashion house and of the eclecticism that makes up the beautifully diverse United Kingdom.”
