Speaking on the Table Manners podcast, the 52-year-old singer said it was early on in her career when she caught on to her LGBTQ+ following.
“Maybe 1990, something like that, I was in Sydney working… and we were passing by Oxford Street where the most famous gay clubs are, and someone said, ‘Oh, there’s a Kylie night on tonight’, and I’d never heard of such a thing,” she said.
“That was the first time I became aware of it being something.”
The singer admitted to sneaking into Kylie nights from the mid-90s, unbeknownst to her fans.
“I ended up at this gay bar because it was Kylie night, and there’s pictures of us, four Kylies – big Kylies – and then me, who just looks like I shouldn’t be there.”
Minogue said she never set out to be an LGBTQ+ icon, but has embraced the following since her music career began.
“It’s been an organic love affair ever since,” she said.
Throughout her career, the Australian singer has been a vocal advocate for queer rights. In 2016, she said she would not be marrying her fiance Joshua Sasse until same-sex marriage was made legal in Australia.
In an interview with New York Post in 2018, she being a queer icon has felt “natural” to her.
“I could say it feels great, which it does, but more importantly to me it feels natural. There’s no judgement – just support.”
