All the quiet clicking keystrokes of the day
We refer to previous correspondence in this matter
Which tumble out like a mechanised hiss of water
We are now in receipt of an expert report
Rushing past the stepping stones
We are optimistic Doctor’s opinion would prevail if
Near to the mountain I dream under
The worker mounts a challenge to your determination

The subduing of the senses by
We recommend you deny liability in this claim
Utter regulation of time and temperature
For worker injury damages
And the liberal application of repetitive tasks
Following a psychological injury
Still cannot kill the thought of you
Allegedly sustained during the course of employment

And I clench my teeth as my nails tap plastic
Should you have any queries in relation to the above
And want to scream, talk to me talk to me
Please do not hesitate to contact our office
For the next time I see the mountain I dream by
We thank you for your instructions
I will also have to face the one I’ve dreamt of
Yours faithfully

Ashfield, NSW

Karen wrote her poem while she was working in a legal office during her uni holidays. It was inspired by her work, by her home beside a creek with stepping stones under a mountain, and by the fact she had fallen in love with a fellow student who lived abroad. She says: “I had written to him admitting my feelings in a bid to hopefully puncture the ‘fantasy’ bubble. He hadn’t responded. His silence, and the suspense, was killing me.” The clever interweaving of two contrasting stories is engaging and entertaining – one a love story telling of an unrequited affair of the heart, one telling of an employee’s psychological injury – both seemingly without satisfactory resolve.
