It was the third time the couple have appeared at the event, attending in 2014 and 2017. The event supports the Royal Variety Charity, which the Queen patrons. The money raised from the show helps hundreds of entertainers throughout the UK, who need help and assistance as a result of old age, ill-health, or hard times.

The origins of the Royal Variety Performance date back to 1912 when King George V and Queen Mary agreed to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at the Palace Theatre in London, in aid of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund. In July 1919, the second Royal show was performed and was the first to be billed a “Royal Variety Performance”, before becoming an annual event in 1921.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended last year, when Meghan was pregnant with Archie.
The Duchess looked beautiful in a custom floor-length black lace overlay Alexander McQueen gown. The stunning gown featured a scooped back and sweetheart neckline, with a black bow cinching the waist. She accessorised with black stilettos, a pair of gold hoop earrings featuring a pearl drop design and a classic black clutch. William looked stylish in a traditional black tuxedo.
Turns out George, Charlotte and Louis were also keen to watch the Royal Variety Performance.
While speaking to performers, the Duchess mentioned that her children had asked if they could attend the show, where a performance of Mary Poppins would take place, but she said “not on a school night.”

As the Duke and Duchess spoke to the performers of Mary Poppins, the Duchess reportedly said the kids would have loved the show. Even William chimed in, saying, “I love Mary Poppins.”
