Jury delivers verdict on Harvey Weinstein trial

Fallen Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been given a guilty verdict. The New York jury found him guilty of two out of the five charges brought against him.

It took the jury five days to reach their verdict. Weinstein’s first charge was for a criminal sex act in the first degree for his assault on Miriam Haley, a Project Runways production assistant in 2006.

The second was for rape in the third degree in a New York hotel in 2013 for which the victim is unnamed.

The jury acquitted Weinstein on the remaining three charges, which included a count of predatory sexual assault.

After the jury delivered their verdict, Weinstein was handcuffed and remains in custody until his sentencing on 11 March.

New York district attorney Cyrus Vance commended the courage of the victims. “Weinstein with his manipulation, his resources, his attorneys, his publicists and his spies did everything he could to silence the survivors. But they wouldn’t be silenced, spoke from their hearts, and were heard,” he said.
