Judi Dench becomes Vogue’s oldest cover star at 85
At 85 years of age, Dame Judi Dench has become the oldest star to grace the cover of British Vogue.

British Vogue might have been around for 104 years, but the cover has traditionally been reserved for lithe young things – the who’s who in the modelling world.

But this month, much to the delight of its followers around the globe, the publication has shaken things up. There’s not a model in sight; instead, at 85 years of age, Dame Judi Dench has become the oldest star to grace the cover of British Vogue.

The actress photographed for Vogue‘s June issue before lockdown but discusses self-isolating at home in Surrey.

She said she hopes “a great deal of kindness” will come out of the crisis.

“I am sure I feel like everyone else, such unprecedented times are quite hard to comprehend.

“What is a good thing is that it has made people aware of the predicament of others who are completely alone.

“If a great deal of kindness comes out of this, then that will be a plus,” Oscar-winning Dench says in the interview.

Dench also admitted to be unhappy about her role in the movie Cats, which was poorly received when it was released last year. The actress says in the interview that she looked like “a battered, mangy old cat.”

When asked if retirement is on the horizon, Dench is adamant we’ll continue seeing her on the silver screen for quite some time.

“No, no, no, no. Don’t use that word… Not in this house. Not here. Wash your mouth out!” Dench says when asked about retiring.

Jane Fonda was the previous oldest cover star when she appeared on the cover last year.in its 104-year history.

While it might be the first time that Dench has featured on the cover of Vogue, she’s a familiar cover star for regular MiNDFOOD readers. Dench has featured on the cover twice, first in 2015 (pictured right) for MiNDFOOD’s special 7th birthday issue, and then again in 2015, as the cover star of our Christmas special, the December issue (pictured left).
