The first Cats movie trailer has arrived and critics have been digging their claws in.

Few film trailers genuinely electrify the internet. Yet on Thursday night, first footage from Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats did exactly that.

While a teaser video that was released earlier this week focused on actors like Taylor Swift, Idris Elba and James Corden, who are portraying the fancy-footed felines, the new Cats movie trailer allows more glimpses of them in what was referred to in the teaser as “digital fur technology.”

It’s also scored around star Jennifer Hudson’s fallen-from-grace Grizabella and her spine-tingling rendition of the production’s famous song, “Memory.”

Critics however have savaged the first look at the new film. Many online have been left feline confused about the Oscar-winning director’s new creation.

Made using computer-generated imagery (CGI) and real human actors, the adaptation is said to feature cutting-edge “digital fur technology” that Universal Pictures hopes will blow people’s minds.

But initial reactions seem to suggest otherwise.

Film critic Wenlei Ma wrote: “I have no words. It’s just a jumble of emotions ranging from horror to befuddlement.”

“What were they thinking?” asked The New York Times, which notes “we have five months to get used to it,” ahead of the movie’s December release.

“Some of the creepiest stuff I’ve ever seen on screen,” wrote one viewer. “I don’t have words to describe how uncomfortable I am after watching this,” added another. “Did I take drugs and forget about it?” asked one of the millions who watched in the trailer’s first 12 hours of release.

“Cats” is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” That book, which was published in 1939, is a collection of poems that each focus on various animals with fascinating backstories. The musical centers on a night where they come together to decide which one will be chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reincarnated.
