Renowned conservationist Jane Goodall has opened a bee sanctuary named after her in the heart of Expo City, Dubai.

Furthering her environmental work and dedication to highlighting the importance of the furry pollinators, Goodall attended a ceremony to mark the establishment of the garden that aims to provide a haven to more than 30,000 of the insects.

The 90-year-old was undertaking a visit to the United Arab Emirates to spread the word about positive environmental practices. The trip included speaking to local media, a book signing and an awards ceremony for Roots & Shoots, Goodall’s organisation that empowers young people to take action on sustainability initiatives.

The Jane Goodall Pollinator Garden garden is located at Terra –The World’s Living Wonder, Dubai’s pavilion used to explore and demonstrate innovative practices for future sustainable living, first built for the Expo 2020 held in the city.

“I am deeply moved to see this Garden come to life as it embodies the critical connection between humans and the natural world. Bees are our world’s unsung heroes, and we must continue to support and protect them, says Goodall.  The expert has been active in highlighting the essential role of pollinators, particularly bees, in supporting the balance of our ecosystems.

A small hive of about 2,000 bees was found in Terra in 2019 when the pavilion was under construction for the Expo, according to reports.

The bees were removed, then cared for by the local Beekeepers Foundation and then, reintroduced to a garden in Terra last October.

The garden has been planted with native plant species that support the health and food sources of the essential pollinators. It is designed to educate visitors on steps they can take to protect bees and encourage the environment they need to thrive.

“This garden will play a role in raising awareness of the importance of pollinators amongst the public,” agrees Goodall.

“The garden also underscores the deep partnership between Terra and Roots & Shoots UAE and our common mission to empower the next generation to respect, protect and restore the environment. By engaging young minds, we can nurture environmental stewards who will lead the way in creating a more sustainable and harmonious world.”

A programme to install hives in 100 schools across the UAE was also announced.

The Jane Goodall Pollinator Garden is a permanent exhibit and a part of Terra, now open for visitors.
