Ahead of the release of the highly-anticipated sequel, director James Cameron has announced his 2009 epic Avatar will be returning to cinemas this September.

The cinematic re-release of Avatar, which remains the highest grossing movie of all time, will be kicking off from 22 September. The James Cameron epic, which follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as he discovers the alien world of Pandora, will be released in stunning 4K High Dynamic Range for a limited time.

For the cinema release, the film has been removed from Disney+, a move that no doubt is meant to drum up excitement and add to its box office success.

The film also stars Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver and won three Oscars, for Best Cinematography, Production Design and Visual Effects.

Avatar‘s re-release comes ahead of the release of the long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, which comes to cinemas on 16 December 2022. Cameron has already planned another three Avatar films, recently telling Empire that after the third of fourth film he may “pass the baton” to another director.
