The preliminary results for the recreational cannabis and euthanasia referendums have been announced.

The majority votes were in favour of the End of Life Choice bill, with 65.2 percent voting ‘yes’.

In the recreational cannabis referendum, the majority voted against, with 53.1 per cent not in favour.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern revealed her votes in the two referendums, after refusing to announce which way she voted up until the results were announced.

Ardern voted ‘yes’ in both the cannabis and euthanasia referendums, a spokesperson announced.

Despite her ‘yes’ vote in favour of the cannabis referendum, Ardern said she will only progress legislation that is in line with the majority of New Zealanders, with the final results being released on 6 November.

This means that should the final 480,000 special votes remain against the cannabis referendum, the Government will not pursue cannabis legalisation.
