Eagle-eyed Wellington-based design Deryn Schmidt spied her Labour-red, tie-front dress originally worn by Ardern as she made her first speech as incoming Prime Minister in 2017.
In a sentimental move, Ardern re-wore the dress today for her final exit from parliament.
“I thought, that dress looks familiar. It’s a classic look and it was so nice to see her re-wear it,” said the designer.
“It’s clever, from her perspective. She’s representing that idea of reusable rather than throw-away [fashion].”
One of the youngest holders of public office, Ardern became an international symbol for how to integrate work and personal life.
Ardern’s departure from her role received global attention. Even the royal family acknowledged Ardern’s hardwork, with the Prince and Princess of Wale sharing on their official Twitter account: “Thank you @jacindaardern for your friendship, leadership and support over the years, not least at the time of my grandmother’s death. Sending you, Clarke and Neve our best wishes. W & C.”
Prince William has often called on Ardern for support. Most recently, to stand in for him in New York, while he was mourning the loss of his grandmother, the Queen.
