The humble cheese toastie, a treasured staple of the Kiwi diet for many a generation, is about to be celebrated in all its forms during the inaugural Great New Zealand Toastie Tour.

A collaboration between McClure’s Pickles and Coffee Supreme, the Great New Zealand Toastie Tour runs for the month of August and sees more than 20 cafes and food outlets from the Garden City to the City of Sails serving up their own unique take on the perfect toastie.

Whether it’s a nostalgia-inducing traditional toastie or a truly gourmet creation, Kiwi fans of this quintessential snack are in for a treat during the Tour.

Wellington’s Baker Gramercy has conjured up a cheese toastie featuring gruyere, stout-braised onions, béchamel sauce and pickles on kumara thyme sourdough, while Auckland’s Federal Delicatessen has opted for a mouthwatering toastie of ‘Fed’ curds, gruyere, Swiss cheese and pickles.

Christchurch’s Terra Viva Café has gone for a meatier option with their delicious roast duck and pickle toastie, while Supreme Supreme has a special savoury mince toastie on their menu, featuring smoked cheese and pickles.

Meanwhile, those who follow a vegan diet can head to Vondel in Auckland’s Devonport, where a toastie filled with pickles, plant-based cream cheese and cheddar cheese, and a house-made vegan pastrami is set to delight taste buds.

Co-founder of McClure’s Pickles Joe McClure says “I’ve seen what the participating cafes have got lined up for The Great New Zealand Toastie Tour this month and I’m truly impressed by the flavour combinations they’ve all come up with.”
