The Tiramisu World Cup includes heats held in various locations across Italy and abroad, while the grand final is held in Treviso, where two world champions will be crowned.
The delicious competition will involve 200 participants, with their entries divided into two categories, ‘original recipe,’ and ‘creative recipe,’ hence the two winners.
Those creating the original recipe are given 40 minutes to create their version and are required to include six basic ingredients: ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, eggs, coffee, cocoa powder and white sugar.
The creative category, as expected, is where the entrants can veer from the traditional dish and must use mascarpone cheese, eggs, coffee, cocoa powder but may also use a limited number of other ingredients of their choice.
With strict rules guiding the creations during competition, those involved must not ask for more ingredients and must serve on the plate provided. Judges evaluate a number of elements of each dish, with points deducted for waste of ingredients.
Though flavour is arguably the most important element for most fans of the layered, coffee-soaked creation, entrants are also judged on a number of other attributes such as technical execution, aesthetic appearance, taste intensity and the balance of ingredients.
While some people are inclined to make their tiramisu boozy, both the two traditional recipes which inspired the rules of the competition do not contain alcohol, so it has been disallowed from inclusion.
In a boon for amateur cooks, the competition is open only to non-professionals. That means anyone who has worked in a restaurant or in a pastry kitchen on any basis in the past two years is counted out.
The Tiramisu World Cup will take place across October 10 and 11 in in Treviso, Italy.
