Is Mare of Easttown returning for season two? Everything we know

By MiNDFOOD

The HBO show captivated audiences, but will it return for another season?

Wondering if there will be a Mare of Easttown season two?

Those who watched Kate Winslet’s latest crime drama will no doubt have finished the show wanting more. But given how the story ended (no spoilers for those who haven’t watched) and the fact that it was planned as limited series, what are the chances it will return?

Here is everything we know about a possible Mare of Easttown season two:

The creator hasn’t ruled out a return – for the right story

In an interview with Esquire magazine in May 2021, the show’s creator Brad Ingelsby said that while he sees the first season as a finished story, he hasn’t ruled out a second season – given the right idea.

“We didn’t ever talk about returning…it’s very much a closed story… I think all the loose ends get tied up. I hope so at least,” he said.

“But I think if we could ever crack a story that was as emotional and surprising, then I think maybe there’s a conversation.”

At the time, Ingelsby said he didn’t have an idea for the story, but that he would “certainly consider” it.

“I would only do it if I was convinced we could make it great, though. I wouldn’t do it just because you have a chance to do it. I would want to make sure that it was as rich and compelling as I hope this season has been.”

Kate Winslet is (sort of) interested

In an interview with TVLine in May, Winslet said she would “absolutely love to play Mare again” if Mare of Easttown season two were to happen.

However, speaking on The Awardist podcast a couple months later, she seemed to backtrack, saying the emotional toll of playing the character was a lot of take on.

“The end of shooting we were like, ‘Holy hell, we can never ever do that again, so if HBO bring up the idea of a season 2, we’ve just all gotta say no, absolutely not, there’s just absolutely no way we could ever possibly do it’,” said Winslet.

“There was talk of, ‘Well, could there be?’ when the show was getting such great responses. And, creatively, Brad has shared some very cool ideas. we’ll see what happens.

“But I also have to figure out, can I do it? Could I go through it again? It did cost me a lot emotionally to be her, and I just have to figure out if I can summon all that up again. It was a ride, that’s for sure.”

Winslet has a number of movie projects in the works, so if a Mare of Easttown season two does go ahead, we might not see it for awhile. The actress is starring in James Cameron’s Avatar 2, releasing in 2022, and is in pre-production for Lee, a movie about a fashion model turned WWII correspondent and Fake!, about the One Coin Ponzi scheme.
