The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced the name of their third child – Prince Louis Arthur Charles.
The name serves as a tribute to Prince Charles’ beloved great-uncle, mentor and ‘honorary grandfather’, Lord Mountbatten, who was killed in 1979 when the IRA placed a bomb in his fishing boat.
The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.
The name Louis is of French and German origin and means ‘renowned warrior’. It is one of William and Prince George’s middle names. Prince George’s full name is His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis.
The Royal Family were thought to be caught by eagle-eyed royal watchers who spotted a page on the official Royal Family website that seemed to be reserved for a new ‘Prince Albert’. However speculators were wrong.
The Royal Family are used to waiting to announce their children’s names. In 1982, the Prince and Princess of Wales waited seven days before announcing Prince William’s name.
