It was a sad day for democracy in the United States on Wednesday as pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building in a bid to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the presidential election.

What should have been a routine event quickly descended into chaos as protesters incited by the US president violently breached the Capitol.
